Human beings are learning machines. From the very moment we are born till the day we die we constantly have to adapt to our experience of living in the world. And the cool thing is, the experience each of us have of living, varies from person to person. No two people experience being alive exactly the same way.
Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP is known as a meta-discipline that can and has been applied effectively to increase human performance across numerous industries and business areas from sales to marketing, from training to coaching and consulting, NLP has many uses. Knowledge of the field has been greatly popularized in the past two decades by personal development speakers like Anthony Robbins, Paul Mckenna and performers like Darren Brown.
Neuro-Linguistic programming is concerned with how a person uses their mind and body to organize their perceptions and behavior. That is a fancy way for saying how do you think, feel and use your body to produce a specific result, whether that is to make yourself feel great or frightened, make your friends laugh or have your boss consistently accept your suggestions, and everything in between.
The way you use your five senses, your body and the way you language your experiences form the basic building blocks on how you experience the world.
For example, a trader will have a very different outlook on what different movements in the economy mean vs. a mom or a scientist. And because they are able to make better distinctions about this new information they can perform much better in the pursuit of some goal, in this case to make his company a lot of money.
NLP shows us that it is not just what you know but how you think about something that really matters. We call it knowing what is the ‘difference that makes the difference’.
But what does all this mean in practice?
It means that you don’t have to stay stuck with constraints and difficulties that you may have whether they are thoughts, feelings or unhelpful behaviors. You don’t have to be stuck with some label or poorer than wanted performance if you don’t want to. It means you can create and have more of the things and experiences you want in your life, much quicker, whether that is a feeling of greater confidence, a sense of peace, or the capability to produce great successes in any area of your life.
By mapping out the difference that makes the difference NLP has been highly successful in developing personal change techniques widely used in Self Help
